Modifications due to the timetable change

From 15 December 2019.

The modifications which were introduced for the Ticino S-Bahn in June 2019 are included in the annually recurring timetable change from December. However, there are interesting new features for the Ticino–Milan RE connections.

Ticino–Milan (RE10)
An important new development from December 2019 is the introduction of an hourly service on the RE10 line between Ticino and Milano Centrale, with 27 connections per day (13 connections between Ticino and Milan, and 14 connections between Milan and Ticino). The north-south connections operate from Bellinzona between 5.22 a.m. and 7.22 p.m., at 22 minutes past, with the exception of 8.22 a.m. and 9.22 a.m.; the south-north connections from Milano Centrale run between 6.43 a.m. and 9.43 p.m., at 43 minutes past the hour, with the exception of 10.43 a.m. and 11.43 a.m. The Albate-Camerlata stop is also new on the RE10 line (except the connection departing from Bellinzona at 6.22 a.m.).

At certain times it is possible to change to the InterCity in Lugano on the RE10 line, thereby creating up to 8 additional connections between Milan and Zurich.

Construction works on the east shore of Lake Zug continue up to 12 December 2020. The timetable that was adapted accordingly in June 2019 for the Gotthard Line remains in force.

Bellinzona–Lugano–Chiasso–Como S. Giovanni (S10)
The connections at half-hourly intervals between 5 a.m. and 1 a.m. for the S10 main line are confirmed. The departure times have been adjusted slightly at some stations.

Biasca–Bellinzona–Locarno (S20)
The connections at half-hourly intervals between 5 a.m. and 1 a.m. for the S20 line are confirmed.

Work will continue on the dual track extension between Contone and Tenero from 6 January to 25 May 2020. Rail replacement buses operate from 10.30 p.m. to the end of services from Sunday to Thursday between Cadenazzo and Locarno.

Cadenazzo–Luino–Gallarate (S30)
On the S30 line, following a pilot project carried out in March 2018, two of the three stops are confirmed as stops on demand: Quartino and Gerra (Gambarogno). Passengers wishing to board or alight must communicate this on the trains and at the stops by pressing the button.

Restrictions are to be expected from 15 June to 10 December 2020, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., due to construction work on the railway line.

A special train for the Wednesday market in Luino operates from 8 April to 10 June 2020. It departs at 9.20 a.m. from Bellinzona. Due to construction works, this special train from Bellinzona departs at 8.14 from 15 June. The return trains from Luino run always at 1.40 p.m. and 3.40 p.m.

Bellinzona–Lugano–Varese–Malpensa (S50) and Como–Mendrisio–Varese (S40)
The timetable is confirmed for the S50 and S40 lines. Since June 2019, the S50 has operated from Bellinzona via Lugano, Mendrisio and Varese to Malpensa Airport (Terminals 1 and 2) at hourly intervals. Trains operate daily from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. The S40 runs from Monday to Saturday, from 5.30 a.m. to 8 p.m., to Varese only.

Due to major construction work throughout the year, on Mondays the first connection for the S50 line will depart from Bellinzona at 4.30 a.m., without stopping in Rivera-Bironico, Mezzovico, Taverne-Torricella and Lamone-Cadempino. There is provision for rail replacement buses between Bellinzona and Lugano. Passengers are asked to consult the online timetable every week.

In view of important changes, we recommend that all passengers check their connections on the online timetable by entering a date later than 15 December 2019.
