The new 2021 timetable takes effect.

The new 2021 timetable takes effect.

From 5 April 2021.

With completion of the final railway construction work between Contone and Tenero, the full range of services planned for the opening of the Ceneri Base Tunnel will commence operations on 5 April 2021. The RE80 line is being extended and the new S90 line will open, including service along the Monte Ceneri mountain route.

The following changes will take effect from 5 April 2021:

RE80: new complete service for Locarno–Lugano–Chiasso–Milano Centrale
The new fast connections on the RE80 line introduced on 13 December 2020 are supplemented with connections every 30 minutes between Locarno and Chiasso. Hourly onward connections are provided to/from Milano Centrale. Thanks to the feeder from Camorino and the Ceneri Base Tunnel, the journey time will be around 30 minutes without a change of trains.

Trains will run from 6.00 a.m. in the morning to 1.00 a.m. at night with stops in Tenero, Gordola, Riazzino, Cadenazzo, Sant’Antonino, Lugano, Lugano-Paradiso, Mendrisio, Chiasso, Como S. Giovanni, Albate-Camerlata, Seregno and Monza.

The RE80 line replaces the RE10 service between Milano Centrale and Lugano. Shorter journey times between Lugano and Bellinzona via the Ceneri Base Tunnel are provided by the S10 and S50 lines as well as EuroCity and InterCity trains.

S10: Biasca–Bellinzona–Lugano–Chiasso–Como S. Giovanni
The new terminus station on the S10 line is Biasca instead of Bellinzona.

Trains run every 30 minutes from 4.30 a.m. to 1.00 a.m. A number of connections are extended to/from Airolo during peak hours. Between 6.00 a.m. and midnight, all trains operate via the Ceneri Base Tunnel with a time savings of approximately 15 minutes between Lugano and Bellinzona. The departure times were modified in some cases.

Between Biasca and Mendrisio, the S10 and S50 lines will continue to operate as a single train. The stops along Monte Ceneri mountain route are serviced by the new S90 line.

S90: new Giubiasco–Lugano–Mendrisio line on the Monte Ceneri mountain route
This new line operates between Giubiasco and Lugano, providing continued service for the stations along the Monte Ceneri mountain route.

Trains run every half hour from 6.00 a.m. in the morning until midnight with stops in Rivera-Bironico, Mezzovico, Taverne-Torricella and Lamone-Cadempino.

The connections on the S90 route are extended with hourly service to/from Mendrisio with stops in Lugano-Paradiso, Melide, Maroggia-Melano, Capolago-Riva S. Vitale and Mendrisio S. Martino.

S20: Castione-Arbedo–Bellinzona–Locarno
The new terminus station for the S20 route is Castione-Arbedo instead of Biasca with transfer connections to the S10/S50 lines.

Trains will operate with connections every half hour from 4.30 a.m. in the morning until 1.00 a.m. at night. The departure times were modified.

S30: Cadenazzo–Luino–Gallarate
The Ceneri Base Tunnel enables good transfer connections to/from Lugano from Cadenazzo, which will considerably reduce travel time.

Connections are available every 2 hours between 6.00 a.m. and 8.00 p.m.

Until December 2021, the important renewal works will continue on the line between Cadenazzo and Luino. Replacement buses will operate from Monday to Friday between 9.00 a.m. and 1.00 p.m. In addition, this line will be completely interrupted from 6 April until 6 May with replacement buses providing service along the route.

S50: Biasca–Bellinzona–Lugano–Varese–Malpensa
S40: Como–Mendrisio–Varese

The new terminus station for the S50 line is Biasca instead of Bellinzona.

The S50 line runs every hour from 4.30 a.m. until 1.00 a.m. All connections between 6.00 a.m. and midnight will operate via the Ceneri Base Tunnel, shortening travel time by around 15 minutes between Lugano and Bellinzona. The departure times were modified in some cases.

The S40 line runs hourly from Monday to Saturday between 5.30 a.m. and 8.00 p.m. The departure times were modified in some cases.

The S10 and S50 lines will continue to operate as a single train between Biasca and Mendrisio. Thanks to the transfer hub in Mendrisio, it will remain possible to travel every 30 minutes within the Lugano–Varese–Como triangle.

In view of important changes, we recommend that all passengers check their connections on the online timetable by entering a date later than 5 April 2021.
