Important changes in the new timetable.
From 13 December 2020.
The timetable change from 13 December and the opening of the Ceneri Base Tunnel are introducing a number of important changes for TILO rail traffic. These concern the fast connections between Locarno and Lugano as well as shortened journey times on a number of routes. As previously announced, the new timetable will be valid from 13 December 2020 until 4 April 2021. From 5 April 2021 the full range of services with the Ceneri Base Tunnel will be in operation.
The following changes will take effect from 13 December 2020:
RE80: direct connection between Locarno and Lugano
An important change starting in December are the new fast connections between Locarno and Lugano. Thanks to the Camorino "Bretella" and the Ceneri Base Tunnel, the journey time will be around 30 minutes without a change of trains.
Trains will run hourly between 6.00 a.m. and 8.00 p.m. with stops in Sant’Antonino, Cadenazzo and Tenero. Individual trains will offer extended service from/to Mendrisio and Chiasso.
The trains from Locarno depart at 47 minutes past the hour and arrive at 11 minutes past the hour.
The trains from Lugano depart at 37 minutes past the hour and arrive at 16 minutes past the hour.
In addition, the following fast connections are available between Locarno and Lugano:
- From Locarno on the S20 line (with a change to the RE10 line in Giubiasco) at 6.17 a.m., 7.01 a.m., 7.17 a.m., 8.17 a.m. and at 4.17 p.m., 5.17 p.m., 6.17 p.m. (journey time approx. 38 minutes)
- From Lugano on the RE10 line (with a change to the S20 line in Giubiasco) at 7.19 a.m., 7.49 a.m., 8.05 a.m., 4.05 p.m. and 5.05 p.m. (journey time approx. 40 minutes)
- From Lugano on the InterCity (IC) trains (with a change to the S20 line in Bellinzona) at 6.00 a.m., 7.00 a.m. and 6.00 p.m. (journey time approx. 42 minutes).
The RE10 line will remain in operation until the definitive timetable change on 5 April 2021 with 27 connections per day from/to Milano Centrale (14 connections from Milan to Ticino, 13 connections from Ticino to Milan).
The trains will run from Milano Centrale via the Ceneri Base Tunnel to Bellinzona, with some continuing to Castione-Arbedo. Travellers from/to Biasca will use the S20 line. Passengers for the panoramic route (Bodio, Lavorgo, Faido, Ambrì-Piotta, Airolo) will use the “Treno Gottardo” InterRegio (IR) service of the Schweizerische Südostbahn (SOB) from Bellinzona to Zurich/Basel.
In addition, a stop will be introduced from 13 December for RegioExpress trains in Lugano-Paradiso, a hub with bus connections.
S10: Bellinzona–Lugano–Chiasso–Como S. Giovanni
For the S10 line, the timetable is confirmed with connections every half hour from 5.00 a.m. in the morning until 1.00 a.m. at night.
A number of additional connections will be in service during peak hours via the Ceneri Base Tunnel. Another new change is the connection from Chiasso at 3.57 a.m. with arrival in Bellinzona at 4.56 a.m.
For the S20 line, the timetable is confirmed with connections every half hour from 5.00 a.m. in the morning until 1.00 a.m. at night. Now the connections travel also from/to Biasca.
The departure times between Biasca and Bellinzona are modified as follows: trains will operate at 13 and 43 minutes past the hour from Biasca and 00 and 30 minutes past the hour from Bellinzona.
Work on the important dual track expansion between Contone and Tenero will continue. Replacement buses will operate at night and are also planned during the complete closure of the line from 19 to 22 March 2021.
For the S30 line, the timetable with connections every two hours is confirmed.
The Ceneri Base Tunnel enables good transfer connections from/to Lugano from Cadenazzo, which will considerably reduce travel time.
The first train from Luino to Cadenazzo now departs at 7.18 a.m. instead of 7.06 a.m.
Until April 2021, the important renewal works will continue on the line between Maccagno and Luino. Replacement buses will operate from Monday to Friday between 9.00 a.m. and 1.00 p.m.
The timetable for the S50 and S40 lines is confirmed.
The S10 and S50 lines will continue to operate as a single train between Mendrisio and Bellinzona.
The train at 7.06 a.m. from Varese (7.31 a.m. from Mendrisio) operates via the Ceneri Base Tunnel.
In view of important changes, we recommend that all passengers check their connections on the online timetable by entering a date later than 13 December 2020.
