The new 2022 timetable takes effect.
From 12 December 2021.
The new 2022 timetable comes into effect from 12 December. This consolidates the range of services introduced with the opening of the Ceneri Base Tunnel in April 2021. A special summer timetable is planned for the period from 16 June to 28 August, to cover the completion of major construction works in the canton of Ticino.
RE80: Locarno‒Lugano‒Chiasso‒Milano Centrale
The RE80 operates at half-hourly intervals between Locarno and Chiasso through the Ceneri Base Tunnel, and the journey is extended at hourly intervals to/from Milano Centrale. All trains operate between 6 a.m. and 1 a.m. with a stop at Tenero, Gordola, Riazzino, Cadenazzo, Sant’Antonino, Lugano, Lugano-Paradiso, Mendrisio, Chiasso, Como S. Giovanni, Como-Camerlata, Seregno and Monza.
From 12 December, another evening connection is available from Monday to Friday for passengers between Milan and Ticino. The S11 operated by Trenord, departing at 10.09 p.m. from Milano Porta Garibaldi, provides a connection at 11.23 p.m. in Como San Giovanni to the TILO RE80 line, which continues northwards.
S10: Biasca‒Bellinzona–Lugano–Chiasso–Como S. Giovanni
The S10 operates at half-hourly intervals between 4.30 a.m. and 1.00 a.m. Some journeys are extended at peak traffic times to/from Airolo. From 6.00 a.m. to 12 a.m., all trains run through the Ceneri Base Tunnel. Between Biasca and Mendrisio, the S10 and the S50 operate as a single train composition.
From 12 December, a connection is available from Lugano at 6.18 p.m. from Monday to Friday, except in the summer months, with Mendrisio as the final stop. To provide a further connection between Biasca, Castione, Bellinzona, Giubiasco and Milano Centrale, the departure of the S10 from Bellinzona will be brought forward from 6.46 a.m. to 6.41 a.m. This enables a connection with the RE80 in Lugano to Milano Centrale.
S90: Giubiasco–Lugano‒Mendrisio via the Ceneri mountain route
The S90 operates in half-hourly intervals between Giubiasco and Lugano from 6 a.m. to 12 a.m. via the Ceneri mountain route with a stop in Rivera-Bironico, Mezzovico, Taverne-Torricella and Lamone-Cadempino. The journey is extended at hourly intervals to/from Mendrisio, stopping in Lugano-Paradiso, Melide, Maroggia-Melano, Capolago-Riva S. Vitale and Mendrisio S. Martino.
From 12 December, some journeys are extended from/to Bellinzona. These are S90 connections departing from Bellinzona at 6.46 a.m. and 6.14 p.m., arriving in Bellinzona at 6.39 a.m., 7.39 a.m. and 6.08 p.m.
The S20 operates at half-hourly intervals between 4.30 a.m. and 1.00 a.m. The final evening connections terminate in Bellinzona.
The S30 operates at two-hourly intervals from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. The Ceneri Base Tunnel ensures that good transfer connections are maintained to/from Lugano, to/from Bellinzona and to/from Locarno from Cadenazzo, which will considerably reduce travel time.
From 29 August 2022, two additional connections will be introduced from Monday to Friday. The first departs from Luino at 5.18 a.m., and the second departs from Cadenazzo at 5.04 p.m.
The S50 operates at hourly intervals between 4.30 a.m. and 1 a.m. All trains run through the Ceneri Base Tunnel from 6 a.m. to 12 a.m. Between Biasca and Mendrisio, the S10 and the S50 operate as a single train composition.
The trains of the S40 line operate at hourly intervals from Monday to Saturday between 5.30 a.m. and 8 p.m.
