From Monday, 15th September 2025, the regional border crossing rail service between Ticino and Lombardy will be enhanced. This initiative stems from the desire of the Lombardy Region and the Canton of Ticino to increase connections between Milan and Ticino, offering new journeys both early in the morning and late in the evening.

The enhancement aims to meet the needs of both commuters and occasional travellers, offering more travel options and facilitating mobility between Canton Ticino and Milan.

Two new morning RE80 connections.

The first additional connection departs from Chiasso at 4:31 a.m. and arrives at Milano Centrale at 5:17 a.m., thus providing the opportunity, thanks to connections with high-speed services, to reach, for example, Rome shortly after 9:00 a.m. The second connection departs from Milano Centrale at 5:43 a.m., allowing travellers to reach Lugano just before 7:00 a.m., an hour earlier than previously possible.

More evening services.

In the evening hours additional services will be operated to and from Milano Porta Garibaldi station. The S10 connection departing from Lugano at 21:06 is extended to arrive at Milano Porta Garibaldi at 22:51, stopping at all stations along the line. At 23:09, the connection departs from Milano Porta Garibaldi, reaching its terminus in Mendrisio at 00:30. From here, travellers can continue with connections to Lugano, Bellinzona, and Locarno.
